Places and Itineraries of Memory

Monument-ossuary at Tonale Pass

The Military Memorial was built on the Tonale Pass between 1922 and 1924 as a symbol of the sacrifice of soldiers who had fought the White War. It was a “sacred enclosure” with a bronze copy of Brescia’s Winged Victory in the center. It was later expanded and turned into an ossuary, where the bodies of more than 847 soldiers, exhumed from military cemeteries in the area, were moved. Also present are the bodies of eight Austro-Hungarian soldiers and a loculus containing the remains of five soldiers, unnamed, who emerged from the nearby Lobbia Alta glacier in 1964.

White War Museum – Vermilion

A museum that houses historical artifacts and memorabilia related to the Great War, the result of the recovery work of Emilio Serra.

Peio Museum 1914-1918 – “The War on the Gate.”

Exhibition documenting the daily life of soldiers at the front and local people, with memorabilia, weapons, photos and videos.

Fort Strino

Located along the road from Vermiglio to Passo Tonale, it offers educational and historical exhibits related to the conflicts.
